The Department of Mining and Petroleum Engineering at the Polytechnic School of USP trains professionals to work in all segments of the mineral production chain: prospecting, economic evaluation, mining, treatment, recovery, reuse of waste and environmental recovery of the exploited area. More than preparing specialists, Poli places managers with a broad vision of the sector on the market.

Poli's mining engineer is not only capable of economically and technically assessing the viability of a deposit. His background in mineral economics allows him to carry out both macro assessments (example: estimating the market and future prices of a certain ore versus its stock in the world) and micro assessments (evaluating the enterprise, the sector and its peculiarities).

In mining, it is prepared to exploit open pit, underground or underwater mines; deal with large equipment, with high technology in robotics and automation, in addition to developing ore storage and logistics strategies. In terms of treatment, it is capable of physically separating ores in order to make the most of the reserve, which also applies to the work of reusing waste, with a view to recovering the exploited area. One of the course's differentials is the emphasis on safety, occupational hygiene and environmental management, areas whose disciplines have a great deal of weight in the curriculum.
