The Graduate Program in Social Anthropology (PPGAS-USP), housed in the Department of Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo, is one of the oldest and most consolidated in the area. Heir to a tradition that dates back to the creation of social sciences courses at FFLCH-USP, the Program was structured in 1972 from an area of concentration in Social Anthropology, offering training at the master's and doctoral level, and standing out, since then, by training professionals who work in teaching and research institutions in Brazil and abroad.

The interdisciplinary vocation of the PPGAS is revealed in the lines of research developed therein, with different theoretical and thematic approaches, mirroring the varied background of its faculty: Cities, spaces and mobilities, Amerindian, African and Afro-diasporic studies, Power and Difference, Expressive Forms and Regimes of Knowledge. The diversity of activities of professors and students can also be gauged by the various research centers and laboratories, responsible for collective projects, financed by national and international agencies.
