The training of metallurgist engineers covers three fields: extractive metallurgy (reduction of ores and primary metal refining, with emphasis on steel manufacturing), transformation metallurgy (rolling, forging, casting, welding, powder metallurgy) and physical metallurgy ( metallography, thermal treatments, mechanical behavior and corrosion). Fundamental to this specialization are physical chemistry, energy and mass transport phenomena and the relationship between manufacturing processes, microstructure and properties, points emphasized in the Polytechnic School course. The field of action for the professional in the area extends from the reduction of ores and primary production of metals to the finishing of parts and assembly of components. The activity is linked to basic industries and the metal-mechanic sector.

The Polytechnic School, committed to the sustainable development of the country and the planet, with the practice of citizenship and with ethical, social, economic and environmental responsibility, has as its mission to train professionals in Engineering with scientific and technical excellence, who can become innovative leaders and entrepreneurs, carry out research, disseminate and preserve knowledge, and provide services of high relevance and impact to society, nationally and internationally.
