The Department of Statistics, responsible for the Bachelor of Statistics, was created in 1970, on the occasion of university reform. The Bachelor of Statistics was instituted in 1972. The mission of the course is to train bachelors in Statistics with a solid conceptual background, to work in the job market, in private companies and public bodies, as well as to train professionals prepared to follow an academic career, continuing with the realization master's and doctoral degrees for future work in national and foreign universities and research centers. It is intended to awaken students' interest in new knowledge and an ethical stance.

Graduates are expected to have the following skills and abilities:

  • scientific culture: statistical work begins with interaction with other professionals and, therefore, the statistician must be able to actively participate in the discussion; for that, it needs to know the most general fundamentals of the areas with which it will have to collaborate;
  • have the capacity for expression and communication;
  • be aware of the forms of data collection planning;
  • be aware of ways to measure the variables in their area of ​​expertise and how to organize and manipulate data;
  • knowing how to produce numerical and graphic syntheses of data, through the construction of indexes, maps and graphs;
  • knowing how to use statistical analysis and modeling techniques;
  • be able to, based on data analysis, suggest changes in processes, public policies, institutions, etc.;
  • possess critical ability to analyze acquired knowledge, assimilate new scientific and/or technological knowledge, in addition to the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • have managerial skills.
