Logistics deals with the design, operation and management of the chain that encompasses the supply of materials and components, the processing, storage and physical distribution of products.

Logistics is recognized worldwide as an essential strategic, tactical and operational support for countries, governments, companies and NGOs to achieve operational efficiency and effectiveness and, thus, establish sustainable relationships with their customers.

An organization's ability to design and operate logistics systems is, and will likely continue to be for a long time to come, a critical factor in its success. To work in this area, professionals must have a multidisciplinary background that favors a systemic view. Preferably, the training of this professional should take place at postgraduate level, not only because, at this point, the student already has an adequate basic training, but also because the multidisciplinarity and systemic vision will be better assimilated by a student with more maturity.

Although the topics that should be included in the curriculum for training this professional were already offered in postgraduate (and even undergraduate) disciplines at the Escola Politécnica and ESALQ, they are dispersed in disciplines that are part of the programs of different postgraduate courses. University graduate. The need for an organic structure for the logical chaining of these disciplines led to the creation of the new multi-departmental graduate program in Logistics Systems Engineering.

The qualification of POLI and ESALQ to offer this graduate program stems both from their experience in teaching related topics and, and mainly, from the teaching, research and extension activities that have been developed for a long time in five of their departments : Computer Engineering, Naval and Ocean Engineering, Production Engineering and Transport Engineering at POLI; and Economics, Administration and Sociology at ESALQ. They cover the various aspects of planning, designing, managing and operating logistics systems.

The Master's Program in Logistics Systems Engineering is multi-departmental and is being offered based on disciplines and advisors from these five departments.
