The strito sensu Graduate Program Psychiatric Nursing – Master’s and Doctoral Programs – at the College of Nursing, University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto (USP) has developed its activities since 1975 when it launched the Master’s program.
The program theoretical foundation lies on the understanding that human beings are a product of the interaction of individuals’ biological and psychological endowment with the physical and social environment. In this context, the understanding of mental health and psychiatric illness/suffering constitutes the specific object of studies with an integrating approach.
Mental health is the “conducting wire” in the program’s dimension in which it focuses on the individual, family and community, health services and system in order to prepare professionals in the health field to meet the biological, psychological, and social needs of the population in general. It aims to influence changes in the care systems through research, critical and analytical reflections and interventions.
Because the health field is a multi and interdisciplinary field, the program has sought support on other human sciences (education, psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy and ethics) to acquire a greater understand of the human being in his/her totality, to improve quality of life, and the exercise of citizenship, in particular, of those in psychological distress.
