The Graduate Program in Pathology was established in 1977 with the aim of training qualified teachers to teach Pathology and researchers, at the Master's level, and researchers, mainly in the Doctorate. However, given the characteristics of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto - USP and the Department of Pathology and Legal Medicine itself, whose professors have always made up most of the professors accredited by the Area, both teacher training and research activities flowed simultaneously, resulting in high-level Dissertations and Theses.

As of 1994, the Program has two options: Human Pathology and Experimental Pathology. The first aimed at pathologists and the second at other physicians and non-physicians trained in the biological field, as long as they had studied General Pathology at graduation. With the Experimental Pathology option, a new moment began, expanding and diversifying not only the entrances but also the lines of research.

The Program is responsible for training many teachers from private educational institutions. Young graduates from public and private institutions, who see postgraduate studies as an important instrument for professional qualification. Biological area students, who do not have General Pathology in their Undergraduate curriculum, can be accepted as long as they carry out an internship in our institution's research laboratories with adequate performance, in addition to going through the entire natural selection process.
