The Musculoskeletal System Sciences Graduate Program belongs to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP). The Program, with Academic Doctorate and Master's courses, began its activities in 1973, now called Orthopedics and Traumatology, and has awarded more than 300 masters and doctors throughout its existence.

In 2016, the Program underwent a profound reformulation, carried out by the merger between highly productive researchers in the field of Rheumatology and Physical Education who were part of the Medical Sciences Program at FMUSP and Physical Education Program at the School of Physical Education and Sport at USP (EEFEUSP), which have grades 6 and 7 at CAPES, respectively, with prestigious researchers from the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of USP (IOT). The central objective of that merger was to create a highly specialized program in the investigation of the musculoskeletal system, in a multi and transdisciplinary way, with a view to broad and impactful scientific production and academic training in the area in which it operates. The current configuration of the Program covers the following areas of activity: Orthopedics and Traumatology, Physiatry, Rheumatology,

The merger of the 3 areas of knowledge (Orthopedics, Rheumatology and Physical Education) is already proving fruitful on several levels. An example is the productive partnership between the groups of Rheumatology and Physical Education, materialized by the creation of the Laboratory of Conditioning and Rehabilitation in Rheumatology (LACRE), where researchers and students from different areas of knowledge work in a transdisciplinary way, contributing to a expressive scientific production and solid academic training. The interaction is also expressed in the institutional collaborative action between the Orthopedics and Rheumatology services, with Orthopedic doctors working in the Rheumatology outpatient clinic and vice versa. The recent pioneering action that illustrates the full alignment between the specialties was the creation of a Rheumatology outpatient clinic within the Institute of Orthopedics.
