The Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism of the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (PPGAU-IAU) has a very particular path and potential, which are manifested in its decisive contribution to the deepening of research, teaching, training and capacity building both in the field of theory and history of architecture and urbanism and in the field of relations between technology, architecture and urbanism.

Its creation expresses a particular context marked by the role and profile of the School of Engineering of São Carlos (EESC), created in 1953. In the almost two decades until the creation of the Program, linked to the then Department of Structures and Architecture, the EESC consolidated a profile of a professor strongly oriented towards research. As an example of this pioneering spirit, it should be noted that João Filgueiras Lima, known as Lelé, came into contact with the first researches in reinforced mortar in this Department.
